  • The Sphinx and the Pyramides of Gize

    Excursion to Cairo, February 2002

The Sphinx, watchdog of the pyramides, has a man's head and a lion's body. The sculpture is 60 ms long und 20 ms high and, unfortunately, already strongly eroded. She was already renovated now and then a little.

In the quarry for the Cheops's pyramid this area fell through the quality control. The limestone was too soft for use as pyramid stones. So the stone-cutters of the pyramids created this beautiful sculpture as an alternative.
