    Castell de Montjuïc

Lots of misfortune had been brought to the city by this castle. It hadn´t been built for the city´s protection, but for its subjugation, namely in the War of Spanish Succession in the beginning of the 18th century. In this war (1701 - 1714) the Catalans fought for a Hapsburg succession, the Madrileños for the Bourbons. After several months, on the 11th of September 1714, Barcelona capitulates to the Bourbon besieger Felipe V. In the citadel at the other end of town the conquerors from Madrid murdered thousands of Catalans. In succession the Castilians could then from this point keep the city in check.

During social riots in the 19th century, it was from this point they were shooting onto the town. And in the 20th century opponents of the regime were executed in the courtyard of the fortress.

In 1960 Franco made the fortress accessible. It serves today as a military museum and a tourist destination.
